Description

Nuclear Physics Tortoise Lecture Series 2026

- Seeing the forest of nuclear density functionals, then building a spherical code.

- Now in its second year (launched in 2025), the Nuclear Physics Tortoise Lectures follows a simple motto:

go slowly, get it right!

This year’s theme offers a big-picture tour of nuclear energy density functional theory (DFT/EDF) as a unifying framework for finite nuclei and nuclear matter. Invited lecturers Kenichi Yoshida and Haozhao Liang will map the conceptual landscape—Kohn–Sham reduction of the many-body problem; the roles of normal and anomalous (pairing) densities; spontaneous symmetry breaking and, where appropriate, symmetry restoration; and a comparative view of Skyrme, Gogny, and covariant (relativistic) EDF families, including current practice in calibration and uncertainty assessment. Connections to observables (masses, radii, separation energies), bulk matter, and linear response (RPA/QRPA) keep the physics front and center.

In the hands-on component, participants will build a minimal, self-consistent spherical HF/HFB solver from scratch. Step by step, we set up the radial mesh and boundary conditions, assemble mean fields (including spin–orbit and Coulomb as needed), implement BCS/HFB pairing, and stabilize convergence with practical mixing strategies—culminating in calculations of binding energies, charge radii, and one-neutron separation energies. By the end of the school, attendees leave with (i) a working spherical code they understand line by line and (ii) a clear conceptual map of EDF physics that ties formal ideas to robust, reproducible computation—the Tortoise School way: deliberate, precise, and durable.
